Skipped Stops: What Happens When a Window Cleaning Job Can't Be Done Today

Some stops just do not happen. Nobody is home for the inside cleaning. The gate code changed. A dog the size of a pony is loose in the back yard. The wind picked up and the 3-story is not safe. Skips are part of window cleaning. What matters is that a skipped stop turns into a clear note and a new date, not a customer who quietly falls off the schedule.

Skips Start With Access

The last article, Access Notes on the Route: Gate Codes, Dogs and Where to Set the Ladder, covered how good notes prevent many skips. This one covers what happens when a skip happens anyway.

In the WindowBossPro tech app, each stop has three buttons: Start, Skip and Complete. Skip is not a failure button. It is how the tech tells the office, in a few seconds, that a stop could not be done and why.

Skip With a Note

The note is the important part. “Skipped” tells the office nothing. “Nobody home for inside, knocked and texted, outside done would need separate visit” tells them exactly what to do next. Some common skip notes:

A photo helps too. A closed gate, a car parked in the ladder spot or a crew of roofers on the house settles any later question about whether the tech was really there.

What the Office Sees

The office sees the skip along with the tech's note. From there, the next steps are usually quick: text the customer through two-way texting, get the new code or a better day, update the address, and put the job on another route.

If the reason was access, fix the access note on the address so the same skip does not happen next cycle. If it was the customer's request, note the new timing. If it was weather or safety, the job can go to a calmer day on the same van.

Skipped Jobs Stay Due

This is the most important part. A skipped recurring cleaning does not vanish. It is still due, so if it is not rescheduled right away it stays on the Waiting List, and after the seven-day grace it shows as overdue. Nobody has to remember that the Johnsons were skipped two Tuesdays ago.

On paper, a skip often means a customer who drops off the schedule until they call to ask what happened. With the Waiting List, skipped work is always visible. See The Waiting List: A Map of Every Window Cleaning Job That Came Due.

Fixing the Route After a Skip

A skip opens a gap in the day. Sometimes that is welcome, if the route was running long. Other times it is an hour of idle van. The office can look at the Waiting List map for a due job near the skipped address and add it to the van's route, setting its place in the order. The tech's phone updates, and if the new customer chose alerts, they get the on-the-way and arrived texts automatically.

Make Skipping Safe

Techs should never feel they have to finish a stop at any cost. A tech who climbs a fence, ignores a loose dog or puts up a ladder in a gust because they do not want to skip is a risk to themselves and to your business. Make it clear that a skip with a good note is always acceptable, and that the office will handle the rest.

At the same time, watch for patterns. If the same address is skipped every cycle, the access note or the time of day probably needs to change. If one tech skips far more than others, that is worth a conversation.

Partial Jobs

Sometimes a stop is not all or nothing. The outside got done but nobody was home for the inside. The front was cleaned but the back yard gate was locked. In those cases the tech should be clear in the note about what was done and what was not, so the office can decide whether to finish the job on another visit, adjust the invoice, or call the customer. A clear note today saves an argument about the invoice next week.

Skip, Note, Reschedule

Skips are normal. Lost customers are not. Tap Skip, write a clear note, and let the office and the Waiting List take it from there. For the rest of the routing tools, visit the WindowBossPro window cleaning route software page.
